Don Pasquale, vieillard riche mais sans enfant, veut se marier pour
déshériter son neveu dont il désapprouve le projet matrimonial.
Pour lui donner une leçon, ses amis mettent en scène un simulacre
de mariage qui l´indispose tant et si bien qu´il consent vite au
mariage de son neveu et le reconnaît à nouveau comme son héritier.
Dans ce petit chef-d´ouvre du genre bouffe, Donizetti dissimule à
peine une critique de la morale bourgeoise. Ce thème avait pour lui
une actualité telle que, contrairement aux habitudes, le
compositeur recommanda pour ses personnages des costumes bourgeois
de son temps: "alla borghese moderna". Dans un style qui
intègre l´héritage musical de Mozart et la tradition italienne,
avec une grande attention portée à l´orchestre, Donizetti enfile
les numéros brillants avec une verve intarissable.
